The Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) on Wednesday said it has no plans of wresting control of Manila Electric Company (Meralco) from the Lopez family, legacy owners of the country’s largest power distributor. But GSIS President Winston Garcia admitted tensions are brewing between him and some Meralco board members and management. Garcia said he’s fighting for his right not only as a major stockholder, but also as a customer of Meralco questioning why power rates are high. He said he has been repeatedly denied access to corporate information matters, which he insists he has got a right to know. Oscar Lopez, chairman of First Philippine Holdings Corp., said Garcia is probably just making noise so he can turn around and sell GSIS’s Meralco shares for a high profit.
